Less than a month ago, The Cross Eatery opened its doors to the masses of suits working in the city. Located in the Red Cross building on Clarence St between Town Hall and Wynyard (right next to Officeworks), The Cross Eatery joins the ranks of trendy breakfast / salad/ sandwich cafes serving up fresh food in a modern space.
I spotted The Cross Eatery during one of my daily lunchtime walks around the city. The lobby of the Red Cross building had been converted into a warehouse-style cafe with long communal tables. The cafe was alive and buzzing full of patrons plus close to 20 people in the queue. Taking in this view, I had to try it out to see what the fuss was about.
Mr. A and I met up for an early lunch today (to avoid the crowds – and there were none, fortunately) and were seated straight away at a communal bench. The menus were new and crisp.
I ordered the Cross breakfast salad bowl with raw sprout, kale salad, cabbage, hazelnuts, mixed beans, poached egg and pomegranates and Mr. A ordered the Cross breakfast roll with ham, poached egg, kale salad, chilli relish and lemon aioli, the only breakfast menu items available for lunch. Mr. A also ordered a cappucino after reading raving reviews on the coffee.
Verdict? Healthy cafe, okay prices and it’s definitely worth visiting for a fresh change to the same old mundane lunch offerings. Mr. A is keen to return to try the breakfast menu and I would happily join!
