So-Cal Mexican restaurant just so-so

As part of our Spring celebrations, Mr. A and I had a long, lazy lunch at So Cal, a Mexican restaurant located on a rooftop in Neutral Bay that opened around a year ago.

The street entrance is easy to miss – the restaurant is hidden up a flight of dark, narrow stairs.  The decor emulates a rustic but very casual Mexican bar and restaurant.  There is a dark inside area (not so nice) and also an outdoor rooftop area (no views to be seen as it is only on the 2nd floor and is in the middle of a commercial block).

On a sunny 25 degree + day, soaking up the sun outside amongst the palm tree plants and bright splashes of blue and yellow furniture is amazing – but only if you get the limited sofa seating!  Most of the restaurant has bar stools which are high, wirey and did not look very comfortable.

Service was a bit slow.

All the dishes we had were just okay and the drinks were great.  But at $90 for a casual lunch consisting of 2 cocktails and 3 tapas dishes – ouch!  Won’t be back (well…maybe, but for drinks only!).

Here’s what we thought of the tapas and drinks, and check out our photos below.

Corn chips ($12) an average serving of chips but the guacamole and tomato dipping sauces were tiny!!!  We were scraping out of the bottom of the tins.  Also the guac is not made in front of you.  A more reasonable price would be $6 (and even then I would not order them again).

Fish tacos ($20) – 4 grilled fish tacos with mild sauce and they sure are tasty. Don’t like the idea of having to order 4 at once.  At most Mexican places, you can order 1 taco at a time.

Chicken waffle ($20) – unusual.  This was recommended to us and there was a whole lot of chicken but the waffle was overly salty and soggy from the sauce seeping from the chicken to the waffle.  The waffle was green and this was a novelty, but I’m not exactly sure what flavour it was.

Tiki tropicana cocktail ($18) – amazing seemingly bottomless tropical mango – pineapple – coconut cocktail that is refreshing and sweet but not too sweet.  Loved how it was served in a tiki mug with a pink umbrella!

Rumdog millionaire cocktail ($17) – extremely refreshing orange flavoured cocktail, served short.  Great for a hot day.
